It is a cruel twist of fate that US President Donald Trump directed “fierce” criticisms at Jordan following the killing of three American soldiers and the injury of dozens in an Iranian attack with precision missiles and drones, claiming that “the incident would not have happened if American forces or elements had taken over the mission”.
The American president, who has become a “laughingstock” owing to his military, political, and economic incompetence and conflicting comments, “turned the tables” and blamed Jordan, the “victim”. He should have blamed himself first for entangling the region in the current military, political, and economic chaos, followed by the more than 50,000 American soldiers, two aircraft carriers, 20 American naval frigates, and more than 50 ground bases in the region.
American forces stationed in Jordan, equipped with cutting-edge air defences, are expected to intercept all Iranian missiles while also protecting their personnel and Jordanian citizens. Trump, as usual, avoided responsibility, blaming the host Jordanian state and holding it accountable. He violated all red lines by denigrating the Jordanian army and accusing it of incompetence and failure to defend American personnel appropriately.
We had hoped, out of worry for Jordan, that Jordan’s military leadership would reply to the American president and his overreaches, but this has not occurred as of the writing of these lines.
