The Israeli flag is flying in Quneitra today and in Damascus tomorrow
Why have the deadly battles in Aleppo intensified since its signing? And how can we interpret the Turkish blessing?
The understandings and agreements reached last Tuesday during the fifth round of Syrian-Israeli discussions in Paris, presided over by US envoy Tom Barrack, went beyond normalisation and looked far more dangerous than the “Abraham Accords.” They were not negotiations but rather Israeli impositions on the Syrian team, which Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani led. They included Hussein Al-Salamah, the Director of General Intelligence. The Israeli delegation was confined to minor intelligence professionals, demonstrating an obvious disregard for both the meeting and its Syrian counterpart.
The most alarming effect of this conference was the development of a “Joint Coordination Mechanism” that serves as a security and intelligence contact cell, as well as the establishment of a new “MOC” room, sponsored by the United States and headquartered in Amman, Jordan.
More importantly, the new Syrian leadership approved opening an “office of contact”, essentially an “embassy” for the occupying state in the heart of Damascus, without the Syrian authorities receiving anything in return except American approval and the new principle of “economy for security”. This means that Syria’s intelligence will become a “department”, or spy centre, providing the Israeli side with the necessary information and possibly more.
There is no mention of Israel leaving the Golan Heights, Mount Hermon, or the southern part of Syria; the recent entry of Israeli forces into the Quneitra countryside, their destruction of civilian buildings like the old Golan Hospital, and the raising of the Israeli flag in the “Tel Ahmar” area in Quneitra all support this idea, showing how important the agreement is.
The Turkish authorities were almost the only ones who welcomed and supported this agreement, seeing it as an important step towards peace, despite the occupying government’s double veto: the first preventing any Turkish military presence inside Syria and the second in the Gaza Strip. Is there a harsher form of surrender and submission than this, coming from a major regional power that played a substantial role in deposing the old government and ushering in the new while relying on its military forces?
It was no coincidence that this normalisation agreement, which transforms Syria into an Israeli intelligence base under American pressure, coincided with the fifth day of military clashes in Aleppo between the Syrian Army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the displacement of thousands of its residents to neighbouring areas to avoid death.
The Damascus administration avoids answering the following questions: who founded the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who armed them, who finances them, and who militarily protects them and their army in northeastern Syria? Isn’t this the United States of America? Therefore, why doesn’t America halt these fights out of respect for the new Syrian president and his government, to demonstrate goodwill towards them, and to spare Syrian lives?
All of the evidence suggests that normalisation and intelligence cooperation between the occupying state and the new Syria are rapidly progressing, concurrently with the process of dismantling and dividing this authentic country, as well as erasing its identity, heritage, and glorious Arab and Islamic history. We do not rule out military intervention in Lebanon, Iraq, and possibly Iran to declare war on the resistance and attack the Syrian army under the Israeli-American banner.
The unfortunate, even painful fact is that we have yet to hear or read a single statement from traditional Islamic forces, let alone Arab governments, condemning this normalisation and security coordination between the new Syria and the occupying state, which was the most vocal in opposing the governments of the countries that signed the “Abraham Accords”. Most, if not all, Arab satellite channels share the same sentiment.
This isn’t the Syria we know, with its proud Arab and Islamic heritage, and we don’t think this “deviation” will last. The days are passing us by.
