New War Threat in Horn of Africa? Port Agreement Divides Ethiopia and Somalia
Ethiopia has signed an initial ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia, to utilize the Red Sea port of Berbera.
In return, Ethiopia would formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, making Ethiopia the first country to do so.
Elias Amare, an Eritrean American journalist, geopolitical analyst and founding member of the Asmara-based Peacebuilding Center for the Horn of Africa, explains how this agreement undermines Somali sovereignty and threatens to further escalate regional tensions.
“A dangerous situation is emerging – if a regional war happens in the Horn of Africa as a result of this reckless adventurism, that will have dire consequences for the region.”
