The US is undergoing a test of its viability as a global leader. Domestic political imperatives have combined to shake the foundation of US democracy to its core, and revolutionary new paradigms in defense have, almost overnight, neutralized the conventional military deterrence once provided by uncontested US military supremacy. President Joe Biden is trying to reposition the US as a global leader by redefining and reimposing a rules-based international order designed to sustain US economic advantage. However, the assumptions of moral authority and military capability that have underpinned the US ability to dictate global norms and values no longer appear assured. While Biden may seek to breath new life into the twin pillars of US moral authority and military supremacy, he will find that these pillars have crumbled over time, and may not support his ambition of continued US primacy.
