Will Saudi Arabia bow to Trump and ask the Israeli army for help with the Yemeni Houthis?
Why not engage in dialogue with them while excluding Arab and Muslim opportunists?
We were not surprised by US President Donald Trump’s statement yesterday, in which he demanded that Saudi Arabia accept Israel’s current offer to assist in the battle against the Houthi “Ansar Allah” in Yemen and engage in the “Abraham Accords” normalisation process with the occupying state. After four years of a ceasefire between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi “Ansar Allah” movement, the poisonous sedition began with a meticulously coordinated Israeli provocation via President Trump to tie the Kingdom in this conflict with the Houthis, against whom it had battled for eight years. Saudi Arabia had already realised that the only way to end this attrition war was to negotiate with its southern Yemeni neighbour, reach a truce, and then continue negotiations to achieve comprehensive peace. The military solution is practically unattainable, regardless of the size of Saudi Arabia’s arsenal or external involvement, whether Israeli, American, or Arab.
It is unfortunate and suspicious that Trump has appointed himself as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s spokesperson, not only because he demanded that it accept Israeli military intervention in this “Arab and Islamic” war, but also because he went so far as to “assert” that the Saudi leadership would accept the Israeli offer.
More dangerously, the “deliberate” and misleading leaks in the Israeli media have escalated, the most prominent of which today is in the far-right newspaper “The Jerusalem Post”, which talks about indirect Saudi-Israeli intelligence cooperation in the war with Yemen through the U.S. Central Command “CENTCOM”, within the framework of the joint Israeli-American pressures on the Saudi leadership to push it into the arms of the Israeli enemy, exploiting
Interestingly, Trump, who falsely claims to care about Saudi Arabia and its security, rejected Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s request to intervene militarily alongside the Kingdom in its war against the Houthis in Yemen, as per the mutual defence treaty between the two countries, namely the US and Saudi Arabia. He received the largest financial payment for activating it, totalling 3 trillion, during his first visit to the Kingdom after taking office.
Trump refused to meet the Saudi Crown Prince’s demands to intervene in the fight for two reasons:
- The first: After suffering a significant loss at the hands of the Houthis, he decided to intervene militarily to halt their overwhelming attacks, which included hitting American aircraft carriers and damaging some of them in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea.
- The second strategy is to use the Saudi leadership and army’s rejection of American engagement in this conflict as a pressure technique to force the Saudi leadership to accept Israel’s offer of intervention and then normalise.
The success of President Trump’s efforts to persuade the Saudi leadership to withdraw its denial and accept Israel’s offer to intervene in the conflict alongside it is the best present he could give to the Yemeni Houthi organisation “Ansar Allah”. This is because the Saudi leadership will lose legitimacy among its popular base and the Islamic world if we consider that more than 95 per cent of Saudis oppose normalising relations with the Israeli occupying state. They endorse their leadership’s stance of rejecting any Israeli military interference in the Saudi-Yemeni conflict and standing in the trenches of the Palestinian struggle to restore all fair Palestinian rights through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
We are astounded by the bogus “exaggeration” of the Israeli occupation state’s military capabilities in the region. Americans and some Arab countries forget that the Israeli occupation state suffered a massive defeat at the hands of the Yemeni “Ansar Allah” movement, which demonstrated its solidarity with the Palestinian people and their steadfastness against the genocide war in the Gaza Strip by bombarding the Israeli depth for more than a year and a half. Sanaa was the only Arab capital that supported the Mujahideen in Gaza and the West Bank. Yemeni Houthi supersonic and fragmentation warheads and drones targeted Jaffa and Haifa, reaching the passenger terminal at Ben Gurion Airport, and destroyed Eilat and its port at the mouth of the Red Sea, rendering them useless. If the Israeli army cannot secure its airport, can it safeguard those in Riyadh, Dammam, Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jizan, and Najran?
The only option to end this war and spare the innocent blood of Saudis and Yemenis is to return to the negotiating table once more. This is an “Arab-Arab” conflict that we must resolve through understanding and dialogue. If America has taken this approach and negotiated a cease-fire agreement with the Houthis to reduce losses and preserve its warships and aircraft carriers, why hasn’t the Saudi leadership done the same as quickly as possible?
Once again, we say it is a shame that Arab mediators remain silent and turn their backs on this war. At the same time, Iran, represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, has offered its mediation to stop the bloodshed of Saudi and Yemeni brothers. The meeting was held in the Sultanate of Oman.
The Saudi attitude of rejecting Israel’s request to intervene in the fight is reasonable and smart, and Saudi leaders should maintain and strengthen it. Returning to the negotiating table with the brothers in Yemen does not decrease or reduce its importance, since dialogue is the only way to end this war, save lives, and shut the door on hypocrites and opportunists.
