‘Game-Changing’ Election: West Africa’s Anti-French Uprising Hits Senegal

Senegal is celebrating after Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the young, anti-establishment presidential candidate defeated the French-backed president Macky Sall to win the Presidential election. Faye’s election follows months of protests in the country, where thousands have taken to the streets against widespread poverty and neo-colonialism.

Amzat Boukari-Yabara, a historian, author, and the President of the Pan-African League UMOJA, explains how Faye’s election fits into the movement sweeping the Sahel.

“The balance of power is changing because Senegal is not alone, there are other countries in Africa starting to resist US and French imperialism.” @AmzatBoukari
