Biden Tries to Out-Trump Trump at US-Mexico Border

In a draconian violation of international law, President Biden signed an executive order on Tuesday to shut down the US-Mexico border. The order authorizes border officials to immediately deport asylum seekers who do not enter the US through official ports of entry, denying thousands of migrants their legal right to asylum. It also imposes severe limits on asylum requests when 2,500 people on average are arriving at the southern border every day.

Todd Miller, an author and journalist specializing in border issues, discusses Biden’s latest capitulation to conservative immigration policy that mirrors Trump’s and how it reflects a wider bipartisan effort to militarize the US-Mexico border.

“People have the right to ask for asylum and for any administration to say that it’s restricted is a clear violation of international law. It’s also the same exact thing that Trump did in 2018” @memomiller
