Malaysia’s New Prime Minister: The Impact on US-China Tensions in Asia

Malaysia’s new prime minister Anwar Ibrahim has spent decades in the service of US interests, chairing the IMF in the 1990s and working with the US National Endowment for Democracy ever since.

His opposition party, a street front he has helped lead, and media networks promoting him across Malaysia’s information space have all received funding from the US government through the NED.

What impact has Anwar Ibrahim already had on Malaysia’s sovereignty and development and what impact will his premiership have on Malaysia’s future?

As a Western foreigner living and owning property in Malaysia, I thank you for this very illuminating and educational background story about Anwar Ibrahim.

I was very happy to see a new party take power in 2018 and was a firm supporter of Dr. M. Of course he had aligned with his former opponent – Ibrahim – to win the election and they then cancelled the Chinese funded high speed rail project. But these projects were rife with corruption and after Najib Razak’s 1MDB this seemed to be a prudent fiscal and legal move at the time.

Ibrahim’s close ties to the NED, IMF and other Western power brokers should give concern to Malaysians. The economic ties with China are important and are the likely path to future increases in the Malaysian standard of living. It is my belief that Malaysia, China, Taiwan and all of the ASEAN members can work out a peaceful and shared economic century by themselves, if foreign influence is recognized and minimized..We’ll see.
