Is China “hoarding” strategic supplies?
Intel Slava Z’s summary (below) of an Economist article on China “hoarding” strategic supplies is a reminder of the true dimensions and danger of the US encirclement of China.
US policy papers openly talk about fighting a war with China not necessarily to defeat it militarily, but to destroy its economy enough so that the US emerges once again the strongest.
This will be done through sanctions and blockades, blockades around the globe rather than in range of China’s military primarily based in China itself.
The US has longstanding plans to cut China off at the Malacca Strait.
China has responded with the Belt and Road Initiative to diversify trade routes/eliminating dangerous choke points.
In turn, the US has targeted BRI partners, backing militants who literally attack the roads/rail & other projects.
It is a vicious campaign pursued by Washington regardless of who is in Congress or the White House and has been ongoing since the end of WW2 ↘️↘️↘️
China is creating huge secret reserves of food, raw materials and energy resources, preparing for possible future problems, writes The Economist.
Last year, China’s imports of many key resources broke records, and imports of all types of goods grew by 16% in volume terms. And continues to grow in 2024, despite high prices. For example, the United States predicts that China’s wheat and corn reserves will soon amount to 51% and 67% of the world’s.
China imports most of its needed raw materials and food. However, such dynamics do not reflect growing consumption, given the country’s economic difficulties. According to The Economist, Beijing is hoarding resources, worried that Trump, if he wins the election, could try to cut off China’s most important supply routes or start a protracted conflict over Taiwan.
At the same time, the process of creating strategic reserves began more than 10 years ago with the expansion of the infrastructure necessary for storing reserves. Moreover, not only public, but also private, to which the government has access during a crisis. Huge volumes of products, metals, and fuel are pumped there.
Americans are concerned about Chinese hoarding, especially in the context of their military buildup. But for now they believe that this is being done for defensive purposes, and not in preparation for an attack on Taiwan.
