Dr. John Brittas, Indian MP representing the State of Keralam in the Rajya Sabha, joined BT Live straight from the streets of Delhi, where India’s far-right government is facing a major youth-led uprising: On Thursday the city center was shuttered, the metro closed, the internet jammed, and paramilitary forces from across the country were flown into the capital in response to another night of massive protests demanding the resignation of country’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over irregularities in the country’s centralized exam system that negatively impacted the lives of millions of students.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in coalition with left groups has been protesting for over a month, demanding accountability and major reforms from Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party central government – including compensation for the families of young people who have died by suicide connected to this year’s exam irregularities and results.

As youth in the capital brace for more police repression, Modi’s government is increasingly “pushed to the wall,” as a movement born from a viral insult swells to the most serious challenge to his rule in years.
