It is extraordinary that Putin still does not understand that as long as he allows the conflict with Ukraine to fester, the more certain it is that Western involvement will result in the NATO bloc at war with Russia.
To repeat myself for the hundredth time, the limited military operation in Donbas was a strategic blunder that will end in World War III. What was required was a quick decisive Russian victory before the West could get involved.
A fait accompli was needed. Instead, Putin chose a lengthy, ever widening conflict. This did not save lives. It maximized the expenditure of lives and the count is far from over.
