US-China AI Race: Automated Domination vs. Abundance

I listen to supposedly “smart” people in the West talk about the US-China AI race who repeatedly and reflexively say “that’s not good” when they hear news China is closing the gap or even pulling ahead.

These same supposedly “smart” people insist AI will be a force of global good, lifting all of humanity out of poverty, illness, and violence – things China has been doing for its 1.5 billion+ population BEFORE it began developing/using AI.

These are also things the US and the “West” it leads has not only failed to address – but has deliberately perpetuated including through a campaign of armed aggression spanning the 21st century stretching from Latin America to Central Asia and everywhere in between where entire nations have been destroyed, millions killed, 10s of millions more driven from their homes escaping poverty, illness, and violence.

How do these supposedly “smart” people think the US doing this deliberately and globally is going to suddenly decide to use AI to do anything different instead of just enhancing its pursuit of dominance?

And by the way, the US AI Action Plan literally says in the first page it is pursuing this AI race against China to:

“…achieve and maintain unquestioned and unchallenged global technological dominance.”

…the same “global technological dominance” it has already openly used to cut the swatch of death and destruction described above.

These same “smart” people lament that AI optimism is “low” in the West and high in China – completely missing the lesson as to why – precisely because ordinary people can see what the West is using it for vs. what China is using it for!

Maybe these “smart” people aren’t as smart as they think they are – and should do a little more thinking to make up for it…
