‘Israel Tried to Kill Me’: Reporter Survives Assassination Attempt

Steve Sweeney, veteran war correspondent and RT’s Lebanon bureau chief, joins Rania Khalek and Zoe Alexandra to recount his harrowing escape from an Israeli airstrike while reporting in southern Lebanon.

“It was only by luck … if it was a foot the other way… there wouldn’t have even been bodies to recover,” Sweeney says, describing how close he and his cameraman came to being killed.

Sweeney also lays out what he calls Israel’s systematic targeting of journalists, noting that more journalists have been killed by Israel since 2023 than in both World Wars, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq combined.

According to Sweeney, these killings continue because Israel is not only allowed to act with impunity — but is actively encouraged to do so.

@SweeneySteve narrowly survived an Israeli assassination attempt while reporting in Lebanon. He tells @RaniaKhalek and @ZoeAlexandra_ok about his harrowing experience and why the US & UK don’t just allow #Israel’s impunity, but “encourage it.”
