Netanyahu is violating Syrian territory by land and air
Where are Turkey and the Arab states that supported the coup, the new administration, and border defence?
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, is visiting and inspecting his forces in southern Syria as part of a large delegation that includes Gideon Sa’ar, the Foreign Minister; Israel Katz, the Minister of War; General Eyal Zamir, the Chief of Staff; and David Ziti, the head of the Shin Bet. This visit is a provocative step that confirms that the southern Syrian region has no connection to the north. It has become a major occupied Israeli settlement and part of the occupying state, much like the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon.
The new Damascus government was content to issue a statement calling the visit a violation of Syrian sovereignty, and condemnation came from its supporters in Jordan, Qatar, and Kuwait. Meanwhile, the United States entered through the back door, also known by some as the “servants’ door,” after rolling out the red carpet last week for temporary President Ahmad al-Shara’s “historic” visit to the White House.
We don’t know where Netanyahu and his massive delegation violated Syrian sovereignty. Israeli airstrikes on Syria have never stopped, whether in the south, north, or centre since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s administration, with American approval, Turkish support, and Russian cooperation.
Netanyahu’s visit, amid a calculated “media circus,” was used as an excuse to avoid testifying before the Israeli Supreme Court, which was scheduled for yesterday, Wednesday. It was followed by the deployment of eight Israeli jets today, Thursday, to breach Syrian airspace, not only over Damascus but also over Aleppo, Homs, and Hama.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a close ally of interim President Ahmad al-Shara, has been silent on the issue. Erdoğan claims to have played a key role in overthrowing the previous Syrian regime, liberating Syria, and restoring its sovereignty and independence. Only a few kilometres separate the Turkish military from these three cities.
The most dangerous aspect of President al-Shar’s visit to Washington is his commitment, after joining the international coalition against the Islamic State, to immediately work on dismantling and eliminating terrorist groups in the region, most notably the Lebanese “Hezbollah,” the “Hamas” movement wherever they are, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
We expected the interim Syrian government in Damascus to publish a statement renouncing its promise to engage in a battle against the aforementioned “terrorist groups” and Tom Barrack, the American envoy to Syria and Lebanon and ambassador to Ankara, to recant it. However, our dreams were dashed, and this is neither the first nor the last time. We can’t help but reminisce about the days when “Assad’s Syria” boldly pledged to retaliate at the right moment and location, a declaration met with mockery and ridicule from its opponents.
This is not the Syria we know and are proud of… Syria’s army has fought four wars to fight challenges, occupations, and Israeli provocations, and we know this opinion will not be welcomed by those who bury their heads in the sand and disregard these facts. God is adequate for us, and He is the best administrator of affairs.
