The Hidden History of Juneteenth w/ Dr. Gerald Horne

Juneteenth, now recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, marks the day in 1865 when General Gordon Granger shared the news to enslaved people in Texas that they had been freed.

However, Dr. Gerald Horne, author of “The Counter-Revolution of 1776: Slave Resistance and the Origins of the United States of America,” argues that this narrative is “misleading, at best.”

Dr. Horne joins Rania and Eugene to uncover the hidden history behind Juneteenth and discuss the reactionary forces still trying to obscure the true origins of the United States.

Juneteenth “is a gift from the descendants of the unpaid sector of the working class- which we refer to as the enslaved- to the working class as a whole. Juneteenth as a federal holiday is a step forward for the entire working class.” -Dr. Gerald Horne
