The PA’s endorsement of the UNSC resolution

Of course the Palestinian Authority would welcome the UN Security Council Resolution which turns over Gaza into the US’s hands, with all the usual rhetoric expected of it by the foreign donors supporting the echelons in Ramallah.

According to the PA’s Foreign Ministry, the UNSC resolution affirms “the establishment of a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance, and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state.” The PA just continues reminding everyone where its loyalties lie, definitely not with the Palestinian people who are still being killed during a pseudo-ceasefire, are still deprived of basic necessities and lacking both land and politics for an independent state.

On the other hand, with her usual clarity, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese called out the resolution for what it is: “a brazen attempt to impose, by threat of continued force against a virtually defenceless population, US and Israeli interests, plain and simple.” The resolution, Albanese added, “will leave Palestine in the hands of a puppet administration, assigning the United States, which shares complicity in the genocide, as the new manager of the open-air prison that Israel has already established.”

It is not difficult to see that the PA is supporting all that Albanese is predicting will happen. The precursors have already been set in place, but the PA’s desperation for relevance will have it agree with anything that can extend its existence for a few more years.

Given the blatant shifting of genocidal plans, this time under the UNSC’s endorsement, the PA’s complicity with genocide cannot be ignored, in the same way all those endorsing the UNSC resolution are complicity. The PA’s statement unequivocally aligns it with genocide, colonial violence, US imperialism, under the guise of humanitarian concerns and a future Palestinian state that is even more hypothetical than before the Gaza genocide.

The PA has always expressed its willingness to work with political actors that prioritise impositions on Palestine, and this is no exception. Only now the entire world has observed how Israel, alongside primarily US support, has destroyed Gaza to the point that the usual catchphrase of rebuilding rings hollow. So, the PA is now openly expressing willingness to work alongside colonialism and imperialism, against the political aspirations of the Palestinian people. For the PA, it seems, a colonial genocide is less destructive than Palestinians reclaiming their political trajectory away from Ramallah.

How will the PA answer to the Palestinian people now? If the international community’s plans for PA reform are materialised, Palestinians will be facing a more violent security apparatus in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. As the stakes are raised in terms of violence against the Palestinian people, with complete endorsement by the PA, the Palestinian anti-colonial resistance will remain more relevant than ever. Likewise, the international community will also collaborate, through the stabilisation force, to eliminate the Palestinian resistance. This, perhaps, is the benefit the PA envisages for its survival. It is the resistance, however, that keeps Palestinians united – whether it takes the form or armed or non-violent resistance. The PA’s endorsement of the resolution may secure it a few more years, but its existence and dissolution will also be determined by the outcome.
